Community service in appalachia
For several years while teaching in Virginia, we took students to Coalwood, West Virginia, the site of Homer Hickam’s October Sky , a book is about four boys, who escaped the poverty of Appalachia and a career in the coal mines to find success. Hickam himself became an engineer at NASA and the author of several best-selling books.

During our stay in the greater Cucumber-War (WV) area, we will work with various service projects such as painting or debris removal. On Saturday nights there is genuine bluegrass fiddling, picking and flat-footing at the Liberty Bluegrass Hall. Really, do not want to miss this!

A tour of the Beckley, WV, mine led by a retired miner, and a 18-mile downhill bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail from the summit of White Top Mountain to Damascus, VA is a highlight.
Students, adults, church and school groups will appreciate this experience in the fall when the leaves are at their peak…. Do read October Sky or rent the movie.
